About twenty-two years ago a lady asked me to read an article in the Christian Science Sentinel. I refused at first, but then said that to oblige her I would do so. She told me that this article had done her good and she knew it would help me. I read the article and was so impressed with it that I reread it. When she asked me how I liked it, I told her it was fine, and that I should like to read more like it. She told me to take the Sentinel home with me. I did so and read everything in it and was ready for more. She then procured a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," for me. At that time I was working in a drug store and was addicted to the drink habit. I greatly desired to quit social drinking, as the habit was growing on me so rapidly that a sense of fear was overcoming me as to the final outcome. I commenced the study of Christian Science, and after a few days discovered that the drink habit had been overcome.
I have had numerous healings in Christian Science, among them that of a painful growth on my foot. This was accomplished in two treatments. Later, I met with an accident which resulted in a badly turned ankle. This occurred on a Saturday about midday, and I suffered intense pain until Sunday morning. I then studied our Lesson-Sermon very carefully, afterwards selecting from the Bible and Science and Health references which I thought best suited to overcome the delusion of pain and fear. As I read, the cloud of fear passed away and everything grew brighter. I discovered that the pain had disappeared, and realized that I was healed. It was about one hour and fifteen minutes from the time I began the study until the healing took place. I then dressed and went to church. The distance was six blocks, and I walked there and returned home without the least discomfort.
In February, 1926, I experienced the healing of a growth which had made its appearance more than twenty years before. It was directly over the heart. As the result of an accident the growth was bruised and became abscessed. I suffered intense pain for several hours, but immediately began to know the truth to the best of my understanding, realizing that in reality there is no pain, and that God never made man to suffer. The pain disappeared but, later, a sense of fear overcame me as to the result should the growth break on the inside. I called a practitioner and he began treatment. With the first treatment this fear left me. In about five weeks the growth entirely disappeared and the healing was complete. I am grateful that this healing was somewhat slow, for through my study of Christian Science during that period I gained a greater realization of the power of divine Love to heal all manner of disease. In our textbook (p. 14) Mrs. Eddy says, "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter, —and the body will then utter no complaints."
