"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." So we read in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (Pref., p. vii). For the strength and encouragement gained by daily pondering this sentence, my heart goes out in loving gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, whose teachings elucidate the Bible and show us how to demonstrate Life, Truth, and Love.
From childhood I suffered from various forms of throat trouble. Bronchitis, tonsillitis, diphtheria, sore throat, colds, and coughing were among the experiences that demanded constant medical treatment. During a year's treatment by a throat specialist I gradually grew worse until my voice was almost inaudible. Diseased tonsils were removed, but no improvement followed. Finally a friend induced me to try Christian Science, and sent me to a practitioner. After relating my physical difficulties I inquired if she could do anything for me, and I shall never forget her reply: "I cannot, but God can." During four weeks' treatment I was healed, and gained twenty-five pounds in weight. My friends were astonished at my changed condition. This healing took place about twenty-six years ago, and since that time Christian Science has been my only physician.
I did not, however, become a real student of Christian Science until later on. After my marriage my husband placed me in a hospital in Washington, District of Columbia, where I was examined by three physicians who informed me that I had appendicitis and other complications, and that an operation was necessary. A friend called and Christian Science was mentioned, and again I asked for treatment. In one week I was completely restored to health, and the operation was never performed. My husband, although not a Christian Scientist at that time, was also healed of appendicitis when an operation seemed inevitable.
