Testimonies of Healing

My love for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy,...

From the April 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My love for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, grows daily as I come to see more clearly her loving wisdom in establishing The Mother Church and its branches throughout the world; the Publishing House, with its busy circulation of pure healing literature; and The Christian Science Board of Lectureship, whence emanate the fearless explanations of the truth lived and expressed by Christ Jesus. Especially am I grateful for the Christian Science Sunday School. When about fifteen years old I attended one for a brief period, and I now realize that it was during this time that the seed was sown which eventually brought me into Christian Science and led me later to take the further step of class instruction with a dear loyal teacher.

Eight years ago, when our little boy was born, the fuller realization of what Christian Science is and what it does for the world came to me; and from that time I have let it guide me. There have been many healings in our family since then, among them the healing of whooping cough, mumps, measles (within twenty-four hours), malarial fever, colds, influenza in severe form, and bad sick headaches. I was completely healed in five days of a severe attack of pneumonia, all pain being overcome within a few hours. Some years previously, when under medical treatment, I had been confined to my bed for about six weeks with a similar attack. Some of these healings were accomplished through the loving aid of practitioners, for whose help I am very grateful, and some were the outcome of my own prayers.

Our little boy, who has attended a Christian Science Sunday School since he was three, and has gained much help by so doing, was healed of a dislocated knee in a few minutes, partly through his own declaration of the truth. I should like to relate one healing for which I feel particularly grateful. It occurred when we were on a visit to Brittany about five years ago. This same child was taken suddenly ill with what appeared to be poisoning, and though we prayed faithfully he seemed to get steadily worse. We could not get in touch with a practitioner, as we knew of none in the place. We were staying in a hotel, and it was difficult to keep the child's crying from disturbing people and causing comment. At length came the temptation to buy some castor oil and administer it; but a great sense of disappointment and rebellion surged up in me after it had been bought. I felt that material aids could not help us, and so we decided to wait until the next day before using the oil. After a bad night the child seemed worse. At length my husband could bear it no longer and walked to the nearest place, some miles away, to send a telegram to England for help. While he was gone, I prayed more earnestly than ever to God for guidance, and for a few brief seconds was able to exclude from my thought the moans and flushed face of the half-unconscious child, and a feeling of God's presence, of His nearness, stole over me, and a great sense of calm. When next I looked up, the little one was sleeping calmly and I knew the healing had come. Later, when my husband returned, the child woke up well and happy.
