Over twenty-eight years ago the words "Christian Science" were first mentioned in my presence, and it has always been a source of gratification that I immediately started out to investigate the subject, not to disprove, but to prove the wonderful statements which were made of its redemptive power. While intuitively I knew that Christian Science was true, I nevertheless tried to push others in while I stayed out and talked about it. Great was my disappointment when no one listened; but we cannot talk people into the kingdom of heaven.
My first healing was of a distressing eye trouble dating from childhood, which the best oculists had been unable to relieve. This healing was brought about by a practitioner a thousand miles away, whom I have never seen. My second experience was with so-called inherited heart trouble. This healing is the outstanding experience of my life, for through it I learned what it means to stand in the divine presence. Awakened one night by one of the old familiar attacks, I started to get out of bed to call for help, but could not move, nor could I speak aloud for the intense pain. Terrified, I turned to God; and instantly the thought came, Now is the time to find out for yourself what Christian Science can do. I was not a student at that time, and had scant knowledge of the subject, but I was desperate; so the battle began and lasted for hours. Then suddenly it seemed as if the room were filled with light, and I leaped out of bed with the joyful realization that I was perfectly free; and I knew that God had healed me. The healing has been permanent.
While I was deeply grateful for these healings, it was not until several years later, when living in a large city, that circumstances became so overwhelming that I turned unreservedly to the serious study of Christian Science. During the twentysix years that have intervened I have passed through deep waters, but Christian Science has been my guide. At no time have I been tempted to use material medicine. Chronic backache, headache, ptomaine poisoning, and many minor ills have been overcome by utilizing the power of God.
