THE HARMONY OF EXISTENCE

From the November 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE is making a great stand today for the truth of being. It is affirming this truth, this spiritual truth, sometimes in the face of persistent opposition, thereby often drawing upon itself the ridicule and censure of spiritually unenlightened human thought. The adherents of Christian Science, however, remain steadfast in their faithfulness to its teachings because they are convinced that these teachings are true, being based on an understanding of God, the divine Principle of all truth. Many who are now ardent students of Christian Science were themselves formerly in doubt as to the nature of real being or true existence. This doubt has completely vanished, its place having been taken by a faith and confidence which cannot be shaken.

Mortals are often sorely perplexed when they think on the inharmony which presents itself to them in human experience. They look around and disease seems very real to them, and sin much in evidence. They are often saddened by untoward conditions and occurrences, and frequently find themselves in the toils of lack and despair. What, they ask, are they to make of these perplexities? This is certain, unless spiritual illumination comes to them they will fail rightly to apprehend the human situation, and remain in mental darkness concerning it. And spiritual illumination can come to them only through an understanding of the truth of being which Christian Science gives.

What, then, is the truth of being; and how does an understanding of it affect the beliefs of mortals concerning the perplexities of human experience? The truth of being is the truth about God and His creation. It is that God is infinite Mind or Spirit, and that His creation consists of spiritual ideas. Moreover, this truth declares that God is perfect, and that His creation is likewise perfect; which is similar to saying that harmony characterizes the entire spiritual creation. And because every idea of this creation is absolutely harmonious, its existence is eternally assured. Clearly understanding this truth, Mrs. Eddy could write (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 563), "Human sense may well marvel at discord, while, to a diviner sense, harmony is the real and discord the unreal."
