TRUE VERSUS FALSE STANDARDS

From the November 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"WHEN the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him." Centuries ago the prophet Isaiah uttered this assurance of divine deliverance. The promise is equally effective today, for Christian Science defines the true standard to be that of the ever present liberating Christ, Truth, rescuing mankind from every form of evil belief and its consequences.

Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 227), "Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: 'Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!'" Multitudes throughout the world have followed this "standard of liberty" and speak with grateful hearts of release from suffering of every sort. Thereby have those in bondage to sickness become healthy, useful people. Through Christian Science others, healed of sorrow and loss, have found enduring happiness in unselfish service to mankind. Many have effaced the stamp of poverty from their human experience, and the sin-weary have gained peace through regeneration.

Christian Science declares this divine standard to be perfect God and perfect man. It defines God as infinite Spirit, Mind. With Scriptural authority it presents the real man and the real universe as spiritual—man, His highest, noblest expression, and the universe of spiritual ideas, reflecting the divine nature.
