"WHERE SHALL THE GAZE REST"?

From the November 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WHEN it is understood that sight is essentially a mental faculty, an all-important question is, Where shall our vision rest? In this sense one sees what one thinks. One's thoughts dwell either in Mind or on matter, and these are opposites, the one real and the other false. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 264): "Where shall the gaze rest but in the unsearchable realm of Mind? We must look where we would walk, and we must act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being."

To link one's thinking consciously with divine Mind is to bring into human experience an ever increasing capacity to do that which is right and good, and essential to individual well being. It is to realize and acknowledge God as the one creator and sustainer of man, as the endless source of supply for every human need. To keep the mental vision on God is to have at all times on the journey from sense to Soul a guiding light, which radiates along the way, dispelling dark, fearsome illusions and removing obstructive mortal thinking. In times of seeming danger or sudden calamities this God-given clear, calm vision gives poise and protection. In a word, to be consciously dwelling in divine Mind— man's eternal home—is to be aware of God's all-power and all-presence, and thus to be equipped with dominion in connection with any and every experience which may appear.

In the Bible may be found numerous helpful illustrations. How wonderful were the ancient prophets' complete faith and trust in God! When the Ammonites and others in large numbers went to battle against Judah, it is recorded that Jehoshaphat, their king, prayed thus: "O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee." He relied wholly on God and won a glorious victory!
