Christian Science has done so much for me that the words in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. XVII, Sect. 2), "Gratitude and love should abide in every heart each day of all the years," have a very clear response in my thought. Day by day, an increasing understanding of the truth about God and man in His image and likeness strengthens me morally and physically.
I heard of Christian Science from a friend whom I met while doing some war work at an aircraft factory. In 1919, when rather overtired and depressed, I was having a holiday. It suddenly occurred to me that "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which I had heard my friend talk about and which I had recognized had helped her, would help me too. I went to the Reading Room and asked to borrow the book. I began to read it, and was filled with the deepest satisfaction and joy.
Later, I had an offer from the director of a big London hotel to take up some work in the hotel in order to cooperate with the directorship in bringing about better conditions for the guests, and, as it proved, for the staff as well. I felt that, with all I now had to give, I could not refuse, although the conditions attached to the proposal seemed unusual and difficult.
