OBEDIENCE

From the April 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Gray days may come, cold winds may blow for me,
And clouds may make my path too dark to see,
But far above where human voices speak
Is formed an outline of the path I seek.
A way made clear by prayerfulness alone,
It lies before me, smoothed of every stone
Whose ragged edge would make me turn aside
From hallowed paths of Truth where I abide.

Yet sometimes as I go the way seems long,
And there are times I almost lose the song
That lives within my heart from day to day;
It seems so dark — I cannot see the way.
I pause and strive to know the truth of man,
The darkness breaks, I find the path again
And shining far ahead I see the day
And know His hand has led me all the way!

My lesson learned, the dark no more I fear,
For evil cannot harm when Love is near
And all around, about, above, below,
The loving presence folds me as I go.
For the great gift bestowed by Love divine,
Patience to wait on God, has been made mine.
At last I stand with lifted head and say,
I thank Thee, Father, that I can obey!
