ADMITTING THE CLAIMS OF SPIRIT

From the April 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The wise man represents wisdom as declaring, "The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old." This is an encouraging message to the individual who has awakened somewhat to the knowledge of God, Spirit. God has possessed His entire creation throughout eternity. And since God has always possessed man, man forever belongs to God. Therefore, any claim by a supposed evil power to possess man's being is without validity in Truth.

In ordinary human affairs an individual who can show clear title to a piece of property should have no difficulty in proving his ownership. God's title to His own creation has never passed from Him. In mortal experience it would sometimes appear to be otherwise. It would seem that sin and fear of disease govern human consciousness to a large extent; but this evidence is not founded on Truth, and it must yield as the evidence of Truth is brought forth, persistently maintained, established in human consciousness, and practically applied.

We occasionally read or hear of claimants to an estate advancing their evidence to prove their title. Sometimes it seems that through some flaw in the title or otherwise the rightful heir or owner is debarred from enjoying his heritage. Under such circumstances he can turn to God, as taught in Christian Science, and work patiently for the correction of his sense of injustice and for the establishment of that which is right, taking proper human steps to this end. Whatever may be one's human experience, this fact is plain, namely, that his right to inherit the kingdom of God cannot by any human belief or enactment be taken from him. By gaining a higher understanding of God, the individual who seems to be suffering temporarily from injustice has the opportunity to win far more than he has seemed to lose. The overcoming of difficulties proves one's sonship with God as his present and eternal heritage.
