In the spring of 1927 a bill, entitled the Nursing Homes Registration Act, was introduced into the British Parliament to regulate the conduct of the Nursing Homes in England and Wales.
One of the provisions of this bill was that every Nursing Home must have a doctor or qualified medical nurse at its head. Before this bill became law, however, a clause was introduced which exempted Christian Science Nursing Homes from the operation of the Act, provided these Homes were carried on in accordance with the teaching and practice of Christian Science, and that the name "Christian Science Houses" was adopted.
In order that the provisions of this clause of the Act may be carried out, a committee of three Christian Scientists in London is appointed annually by The Christian Science Board of Directors, and is known as the Committee on Christian Science Houses. At the present time there are six Christian Science Houses in England. In these Houses the guests rely entirely upon the ministrations of Christian Science, for Parliament has given them exemption from the administration of the Act upon the clear understanding that no material remedies are used or medical attention given in these Houses.
