WHAT MUST WE DO?

From the January 1937 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Complete salvation from all evil—sin, disease, poverty, want, sorrow, death—is ready and waiting for every individual on earth. It is not located in some far-off heaven beyond the skies, nor is it an experience confined to a dim and distant future. All that is necessary to bring about a perfect and satisfying deliverance from all discord and suffering, from error of every name and nature, is present with each one of us at this moment. It is very near, as near to us as are spiritualized thoughts.

God is infinite and perfect. He is unfathomable Love, and it is not His will, nor according to His plan, that one of earth's inhabitants should sin, suffer, or die. God's plan is all-embracing good for all; it is complete, scientific, and intact. He provides the way and the power whereby salvation may be achieved through Christ. The work to be done in bringing out the facts of salvation is ours.

Jesus declared in a few words that which must be done by all men in order that they may have entrance into the kingdom of spiritual harmony and divine freedom. He said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This, then, is what we must do—"know the truth." This process of true thinking can be very simply stated, but its accomplishment requires a vast amount of study and an entire singleness of purpose. To know Truth is to understand God, for God is Truth, as well as Life and Love; and Mary Baker Eddy declares in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 3), "To understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire." A work of incomparable magnitude and inestimable importance! And yet its vastness should not dismay any one of us, for Truth dawns upon the thought step by step, "precept upon precept; line upon line."
