"CHRISTIAN MARVELS"

From the April 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 474), "Christian marvels (and marvel is the simple meaning of the Greek word rendered miracle in the New Testament) will be misunderstood and misused by many, until the glorious Principle of these marvels is gained."

Some persons without knowledge of this Principle have had difficulty in understanding the true nature of these "Christian marvels" because they regarded them merely as instances of the contravention of law by a superhuman power not understood and, as they believed, not understandable. Others have been skeptical with regard to the miracles because they believed they could not have been done except in accordance with so-called material law. Still others have had difficulty in reconciling these "signs and wonders" to human reason, and therefore they have endeavored to account for them on naturalistic grounds.

However, an occurrence which appears miraculous to the human mind, because of its limited grasp of spiritual realities and divine law, may be entirely understandable when considered from the viewpoint of infinite Mind, or Principle; hence, what is marvelous to human sense may be a perfectly natural and lawful manifestation of divine intelligence.
