From childhood I suffered from stomach disorders, and from headaches caused by astigmatism. Ailments increased in number as I grew to womanhood. I was like the woman in the Bible who "had suffered many things of many physicians, . . . and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." An eye specialist told me that I should have to change from the glasses I wore when reading to thick lensed glasses for continuous use. Because of physical pain, for which even prescribed sedatives brought no relief, a consultation was held with several physicians, among them a prominent surgeon, and I was told that an operation was imperative. As I had already been operated on four times for various ailments, this diagnosis filled me with despair and great unhappiness. I was afraid to live and more afraid to die.
At this time Christian Science was presented to me by a friend, one of whose relatives had been healed of an incurable disease by Christian Science treatment. As a last resort I visited a Christian Science practitioner, and was healed instantaneously of the need of wearing glasses. and within a week I was healed of paralysis of the bowels, as well as of bleeding hemorrhoids. Although the major ailment for which the operation was considered necessary—an internal growth and complications, such as adhesions—did not yield immediately, I found that with purification and spiritualization of thought, bodily suffering lessened. The healing occurred fourteen years ago, and the operation was never necessary.
One particular healing stands out in my memory. Before becoming a student of Christian Science, I had a sacroiliac displacement, for which I doctored many months. I was told by the doctor that I should have to wear a special surgical garment to prevent a recurrence. This I refused to do. Soon after I became interested in Christian Science this joint again snapped out of place. I did my work as we are taught in Christian Science by declaring that God, infinite, everpresent Love, filled all space and therefore was right where this displacement seemed to be, and the joint snapped into place instantly. Many times later, when a difficulty did not yield so readily as I could have wished, I remembered this healing, which was accomplished by a childlike faith in the power of God to heal, and I was always strengthened.
