"JUDGE NOT ACCORDING TO THE APPEARANCE"

From the April 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If we stop honestly to consider why we are not bringing out more harmony in our experience, or why we are not making greater progress Spiritward, we are apt to find it is because we are judging "according to the appearance." Christ Jesus admonished us, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." It should be plain that Jesus could not have healed and relieved all types of human suffering had he regarded the testimony of the senses as real. He met and mastered sin. sickness, and death on the basis of the perfection of God and man, claiming no power, reality, or presence apart from God. His spiritual sense cognized purity, health, and life where to material sense the imperfect appeared to be.

We who are endeavoring to follow the Master learn through the study of Christian Science that false mental pictures, illusive concepts of things, are not according to God's law; therefore they are without power or reality. The difficulty which humanity experiences in realizing this fact arises from the aggressive suggestions of mortal mind, which accepts as real only that which appears real to the material senses.

Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 121): "The earth's diurnal rotation is invisible to the physical eye, and the sun seems to move from east to west, instead of the earth from west to east. Until rebuked by clearer views of the everlasting facts, this false testimony of the eye deluded the judgment and induced false conclusions. Science shows appearances often to be erroneous, and corrects these errors by the simple rule that the greater controls the lesser."
