Christ Jesus' mission was not primarily to heal sickness and to raise the dead, but to prove that matter is not the substance of true being, and to bring salvation to men by helping them to spiritualize their thinking and living. His sayings, which are ever helpful and compassionate, have therefore a spiritual signification. Thus we may confidently approach them with the thought of finding cheer, comfort, new hope, and heavenly direction in the work of solving our daily problems, and healing our shortcomings and anxieties.
For centuries the following exhortations by our dear Master have been pondered by those hungering and thirsting for Truth: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." Should it seem difficult for us to realize the importance of his words? Surely every wrong thought and desire can be conquered. We must make the necessary endeavor, so that the exalted ideal he set forth will be ever cherished in our thoughts and glorified in our deeds. Of what more could we avail ourselves!
The necessity of exercising moral courage and self-control through spiritual understanding must be clearly seen, for without such earnest effort we cannot build our spiritual structure on the foundation of Christ, Truth. And without the exercise of earnest moral restraint, what good can the inaudible prayer of asking, seeking, and knocking bring into our lives?
