THE SCIENCE OF BEING

From the April 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is frequently stated in testimonies given by those who have been healed through the application of Christian Science that their healing resulted from repeating "the scientific statement of being," which may be found on page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The reason for this is readily seen when it is understood that this statement contains the essential spiritual facts upon which the Science of being is based.

When one sees that the truth contained in "the scientific statement of being," although amplified and explained in other parts of the Christian Science textbook, is fundamental, one discerns that a repetition of this statement should, and often does, have a healing effect. The repetition of this statement in times of need, or at other times, should not be considered as repeating a formula. But it is quite natural that those in need of help, especially when the need is immediate and urgent, should turn their thought at once to the truths contained therein. It is in every instance Truth that heals, and not the mere repetition of words.

Students of Christian Science know that a treatment or healing prayer generally consists of the affirmation of Truth and the denial of error. Sometimes the denial precedes the affirmation, as in fact it does in the first two sentences of the scientific statement referred to above, as follows: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."
