When quite young I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting with a Christian Scientist at her urgent but loving request. A testimony of the healing of besotted drunkenness when all else had failed him, given by a fine-looking, alert, intelligent man, make a deep impression on me, and I decided right then that if ever all else failed in my experience I too would turn to Christian Science. I knew nothing of its teachings, but always held kindly thoughts about it.
Several years later all else seemed to be failing—doctors, medicine, climate, everything. Every organ of my body seemed to be afflicted. Most painful at this particular time was a throat infection pronounced by a specialist as incurable.
My husband and I were members of an orthodox church, and being regular attendants I felt we must go to church on this Sunday as usual. Because I was too ill to walk the few blocks to the church. I proposed we attend the Christian Science service being held in a theater building next door to the hotel where we were living.
