My experience in Christian Science extends over a period of thirty-five years. I began the study of this Science when my whole life seemed about to be blacked out by human suffering. This suffering was not confined to me alone, but was shared by other members of my family. I had been troubled from early manhood by indigestion, which, as mounting cares grew to daily worries, became so aggravated that I could not retain my food. About this time a small son contracted ear trouble, called by the doctor nerve deafness, which it was said would eventually lead to a total loss of hearing. Then, to add to the bitterness of my cup, I was afflicted with a form of inflammatory rheumatism that developed into dropsy.
At this juncture a close friend told me of his wife's healing through Christian Science, and urged me to try it. Despite my great need of physical help, I was reluctant to follow my friend's recommendation, because what little I had heard of Christian Science had been unfavorable. But finally I called upon a Christian Science practitioner. When I asked the practitioner what he meant by treatment, he replied that it was the Christian Scientist's concept of true prayer. As I had long been a member of an orthodox church, it was not difficult for me to believe in the power of prayer. Treatments were begun for me, and the practitioner, realizing my complete lack of understanding, also explained how Christian Science heals. I shall never forget how patient he was with me, how much Love he reflected as he worked to dispel my fears.
Perhaps it was only natural for me to think of food, because it had been so long since I had been able to eat without distress. I asked him what I should eat, half expecting him to recommend some dietary course. Imagine my surprise when he told me to eat anything I wished. My first reaction was one of doubt. In fact, I told him it would be impossible for me to do that, because sound reason was against it. He had a ready answer. "If a doctor prescribed for you," he said, "would you not follow his advice?" I had to answer "Yes," and then he replied, "Well, follow the Christian Science prescription."
