Christian Science came into my life many years ago when a relative stayed with us about two weeks, bringing her Bible, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and some periodicals with her. She expressed so much kindness and so much devotion to her religion that I became interested in it. I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting with her, and before she went home she gave me a copy of the Sentinel, which I read from cover to cover. I decided to get the textbook, Science and Health, so purchased one at a Reading Room. As I read I was filled with joy, for I knew I had found the truth about God and His creation. Many things in the Bible which I had not understood were made clear. It answered my questions. I also had a deep feeling of love and gratitude for the author of the book. Since then I have had many proofs of the truth of this teaching.
My first experience was so helpful to me that I should like to relate it, in the hope that it will help others. A few months after I began to read Science and Health my husband had a business opportunity in a distant city, so we moved there. I had never been separated from a younger sister before, and I was homesick and worried about her. I felt that I should be there to watch over her, a self-assumed responsibility.
One wakeful night I was trying to think of a plan to get back home, when the thought came, "This is not the way Christian Science teaches one to handle problems." Then the question came, "How would Christian Science heal this problem?" Instantly a voice came to me as distinctly as though someone had spoken, "Say the Lord's Prayer." I immediately began to do so, and I did not get any farther than the first line (Matt. 6:9), "Our Father which art in heaven," when I knew how Christian Science heals. God was her Father just as He was mine, and He was there with her, taking care of her. I was healed, and in awe and wonderment thought how this proved what I had been reading in Science and Health. Because God was Mind, He had understood; because He was ever present, He had heard me; and because He was Love, He had answered and comforted me. This also taught me the sacredness of the Lord's Prayer. I have found healing and comfort many times since in this prayer.
