Testimonies of Healing

I should like to testify to my first experiences...

From the September 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I should like to testify to my first experiences in the study of Christian Science. The first time I ever saw or heard of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was in August, 1934, at which time I was a practical nurse. For a year and a half previous to 1934 I had been having daily medical treatments for neuritis. I was unable to move one arm, which was drawn to my side; but I was called on a case to care for an elderly woman, who the physician said would live but a short time.

The daughter of my patient, a student of Christian Science, took me to her mother's home. On leaving, she picked up Science and Health and asked me if I cared to read it. I assured her I would.

I was not aware of the good that book held in store for me, supposing it was just an ordinary story book. But, thank God, it was just what I had been looking for. That evening, as soon as my patient was quiet, I went into an adjoining room and began to read, reading into the early hours of the morning. The next day I did more reading, and on the third day, to my surprise, while I was combing my hair I found I was using the hand which had not been raised for eighteen months. I ran into the room where the patient lay, waving my hand over my head to show her what had taken place. She said, "I'll wager you have been reading that book my daughter left here;" and so I had.
