THE PROPHETS AND SPIRITUAL EQUIPMENT

From the May 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Luminous with power and spiritual vision, the Bible is recognized by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, as a primary source of equipment for our daily activity and progress. Studied from the standpoint of Christian Science, the Bible may be likened to the powerful voice of a modern radio operator guiding and directing the planes that fly in high altitudes and establishing protection for their safe arriving.

In the prophetic literature of the Old Testament we find a rich storehouse of valuable equipment for these modern days. The customary arrangement of the sixteen prophetic books has been, in the past, somewhat of a hindrance to a full practical understanding and use of these books. The Hebrew people always arranged their literature with the long books and the short books in respective groups. Hence we have the four long (major) Prophets followed by the twelve short (minor) Prophets of Israel and Judah.

Under this arrangement it might appear that the shorter Prophets are less important. But this is not true. A chronological arrangement silences this objection and helps us to formulate a workable basis from which to understand their messages and their applicability to today's needs.
