Mary Magdalene

From the August 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Not without reason did the Master first
Appear to her on resurrection day.
Of those who followed him, none did more thirst
For deeper knowledge of the Christly way.

Mary remained alone and wept, and sought
And found beside the sepulcher that hour,
Not person, but the Principle he taught
And proved for all to be the only power.

So ready to believe and understand—
Not without reason he chose her to be
The one to tell the others not at hand,
Of the ascension and the victory.

Hers was the true receptive state of mind,
The ever-risen Christ first seeks to find.
