In 1926 I had my first copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Thinking that Christian Science was for the healing of sickness only. I laid the book away.
In the spring of 1934 I lost my entire family in an accident and not knowing that Christian Science healed sorrow, I was left alone to "work out [my] own salvation with fear and trembling" (Phil. 2:12). Since I had been reared in a Christian home, it was only natural that I turned to God for comfort. It was then that I picked up a copy of Science and Health and read occasionally. The only thing that closed my mind to my loss was the repeating of the Lord's Prayer over and over.
During the Second World War, when some of my employees entered the service and good help was difficult to get, it became necessary for me to work long hours. After several years I became ill with severe hemorrhages, and thinking it was because of the long hours of hard work, I gave little heed to it until I lost consciousness in my home on several occasions. Then I realized that my heart and lungs were weakened by the loss of much blood. I asked a Christian Science practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. As soon as I was able to walk to my car from my home, I returned to my business, where it was necessary to work longer hours, for I had lost more help through lack of harmony during my illness. My condition did not improve, and after three years I knew that I must let first things come first. I sold my business and retired to give my entire time to the study of Christian Science.
