I should like to give an instance of an instantaneous healing in my experience. Many years ago I lay in the far-off jungles of Assam in the last stages of dysentery, the only woman in a camp of seventy men. For as long as I was able I clung to the little I then knew of Christian Science, but found myself constantly serving two masters, at one time declaring my oneness with God, ever perfect and harmonious; the next minute overwhelmed by the human conditions.
At last, when I was fast entering the valley of the shadow of death, my husband, who had even less understanding than I possessed, but who had been doing his best to help me, found in a Christian Science journal the name and address of a practitioner in India. A runner was sent with a telegram to the nearest railhead, fourteen miles away, with an urgent request for help. The practitioner received it the next day.
Early the following morning the camp was ordered to move, and I was carried in my bed through the jungle. I was fast losing consciousness and was no longer able to swallow. About midday the camp was passing through a tea estate. The owners, two young planters, seeing my dying condition, suggested that I be left in the bungalow until my husband, after posting the men, could return and be with me. As there was nothing more my husband could humanly do, he gratefully accepted their offer. I was carried into the bungalow unconscious, and my bed and belongings were placed in an empty room. There I was left undisturbed for several hours.
