For a long time I have wanted to express through our periodicals my gratitude to God for Christian Science. On many an occasion when I have been in the depths of despair, with no human hand to help, a testimony from the Journal or the Christian Science Sentinel has given me courage and renewed faith to press on.
I have had many healings in Christian Science, some of which were those of heart trouble, liver complaint, and nervous prostration. These demonstrations I appreciated, but false material pleasures still attracted me. Finally I awoke to the fact that a social habit was binding me with what seemed to be unbreakable chains. In despair, and at the recommendation of my loving wife, a Christian Science practitioner was consulted. The patient insistence of the practitioner that the real man could not sin, and that I was in reality that man, had its effect. One day he said, "You are healed," and while I could not see victory, that night I went home without the stimulant which had been my companion for many years.
The healing was complete; there were none of the aftereffects which it is claimed accompany such abrupt cessation. Smoking and drinking vanished forever from my experience. Well I remember the following words, which kept constantly ringing in my ears (Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy, p. 206): "Good is my God, and my God is good."
