FREEDOM

From the January 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Regardless of the size, weight, and shape of its body in relation to its wingspread, the bumblebee flies. It goes about its work free, unconcerned with any aerodynamic theory. Is there not a lesson in this for us? We too can go about our daily work free and unhampered by mortal theories, and Christian Science shows us how.

This Science explains that enslavement is not the legitimate state of being and that it will stop when humanity enters into its divinely derived dominion over erroneous thinking, when it rejects false theories regarding God, man, and the universe. We must be ready and willing to throw off erroneous thinking and put on enlightened understanding. Such understanding reveals man as tributary to God, Mind, who knows Himself as the One and All, the great I AM. He knows that He is the only Mind and that the spiritual universe is His manifestation, or creation, and that man, His child, is included in this spiritual manifestation. All that He has made is perfect and whole. In the Bible we read (Gen. 1: 31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."

The influence of the leaven of Truth confers a freedom which destroys all chains of bondage to materiality. Mary Baker Eddy predicts in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" ( p. 118): "Ages pass, but this leaven of Truth is ever at work. It must destroy the entire mass of error, and so be eternally glorified in man's spiritual freedom." Truth and freedom go hand in hand. Jesus told us that to know the truth was to be free.
