MAN IS REFLECTION

From the January 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science, by revealing man as the reflection of God, thus makes known a most important fact of divine metaphysics. The word reflection means the exact image or likeness of anything mirrored. Just as a person standing before a mirror sees the exact likeness of himself, so we see in the mirror of divine Science the exact likeness of God—man.

Man, the complete idea of God, does not depend upon his own efforts for his supply, health, intelligence, or activity. Right now man is substantial, healthy, wise, intelligent, loving, and active, because he reflects wholly and continuously all of God's attributes. Since man is God's image and likeness, he constantly manifests all the goodness, the harmony, the abundance, and the love of God.

Looking into the mirror of divine Science, we become conscious of the inseparable and indestructible relationship of God and man, His reflection. We rid ourselves of the belief that we can express any quality or can act independently of God. This precludes the possibility of a sick, sinful, unhappy man, separated from God. We learn that reflection indicates oneness of being, the unity of God and His idea. We become aware of God's being and of man's capacity, as reflection, to express the nature of God in infinitude of harmony, beauty, power, form, outline, color. This oneness, understood and demonstrated, brings healing into all our affairs, into the home, the church activities, and the business relations. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 3), "The Divine Being must be reflected by man,—else man is not the image and likeness of the patient, tender, and true, the One 'altogether lovely.'"
