It has been my privilege to be a student of Christian Science since 1909. During these years I have been sincerely grateful for the way Christian Science came into my life, because it early revealed to me that God answers prayer when we pray with true motives.
As far back as I can remember, my mother had been a semi-invalid. By the time I reached high school, her illness had become so severe that, after she had tried surgical operations, change of climate, travel, osteopathy, and other methods of so-called healing, the medical verdict was given that the only hope left was another surgical operation; and it was considered very doubtful if she could live through the shock of it. I had come to the place where the worry about my mother, along with most of the care of the home and a full high school schedule, had brought me to the verge of nervous exhaustion and breakdown.
These conditions led my mother to keep a Bible with her constantly, from which she would read from time to time during the day. She read Jesus' promises in the New Testament, and we prayed as best we knew how for health to be restored, but the situation gradually grew worse.
