The basis of true being is spiritual. The spiritual basis is boundless by reason of its divine character, and it is also perfect in all its manifestations. Whatever fails to express illimitable purity and perfection has no basis in Spirit.
In opposition to Spirit we find matter. The material basis of existence is finite and is the opposite of Spirit. If we look to matter we find limitation and uncertainty. The beliefs governing this opposition to Spirit are named material laws and are said to be invariable, but in reality they are not so. For instance, the law of gravitation is claimed to be unchangeable. The great demonstrator of spiritual law, Christ Jesus, did not, however, regard it in this light. He annulled its claims to immutability when he walked on the Sea of Galilee.
Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 273), "Jesus walked on the waves, fed the multitude, healed the sick, and raised the dead in direct opposition to material laws." Jesus had the courage to deny the claims of material law because he understood a higher law, the law of Spirit. To Christ Jesus the basis of existence was not material but spiritual, and this correct view of God and God's law gave him dominion over all material conditions.
