Through the early annals of the Old Testament, from the days of Moses to the time of David, runs the story of Amalek and his tribe, persistent enemies of Israel. Mighty were the spiritual wrestlings of the prophets in their conflict with the materialistic Amalek, and pointed are their experiences when compared with ours today.
Against Moses' belief that the Lord would "have war with Amalek from generation to generation" (Ex. 17:16), the record states that "the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven" (verse 14). Balaam, likewise not underestimating the enemy's claim of material priority, acknowledged that "Amalek was the first of the nations;" but he saw that "his latter end shall be that he perish forever" (Num. 24:20).
Those prophetically inspired have long grappled courageously with the belief of materialistic attacks upon good, which have been aided by misgovernment and false religion. Since the year 1866, however, the nullification of human error has not been just a prophecy, but has been possible of present individual and collective realization. In that year Mary Baker Eddy proved by her revelation and application of Christian Science that discernment of the allness of God and of His idea can bring an end to evil experience.
