While still a boy I frequently felt unhappy over the teachings of the church which my family attended; and after I came to America, I visited a number of churches of other denominations, hoping to find satisfactory answers to my questions concerning God. Finally, through friends, I found peace in Christian Science, which revives the words and works of Christ Jesus and enables us to obey his command (Matt. 10:8), "Heal the sick."
I have had many healings in Christian Science, but the most outstanding was the healing of heart trouble in one treatment. For a long time I was far from well and would stagger home exhausted from my strenuous work at a men's club. Several times I lost consciousness, and the club insisted on my going for checkups to doctors of their choosing. Each of these reported a very bad heart condition and recommended that I take at least six month's rest from my work.
I had now begun the study of Christian Science and had become a member of a branch church, where I served as usher. One Sunday morning while I was standing at my post as the audience was leaving, a little woman stopped to shake hands with me. Knowing her to be a practitioner, I told her that my heart was acting up and that I needed help. "I will help you," she said, and with that she was gone. I received my healing in one absent treatment through the practitioner's realization of perfect God and of perfect man made in His likeness, upright and free. On the following Tuesday the club insisted that I have another checkup. The doctor took a long time examining me and then put his instruments away without saying a word. Finally he looked at me and said, "Whatever you have had, there is not a sign of it left." That was about ten years ago, and I have been working hard ever since with no ill effects.
