CONTINUITY OF CONSCIOUSNESS

From the July 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

All true consciousness proceeds from the divine Mind and is therefore continuous and constant, uninterrupted, unimpaired, unlimited. Christian Science teaches that Mind never lapses into unconsciousness; therefore its manifestation, man, cannot do so. Mind knows all things, and man as Mind's reflection knows everything needful. Consciousness is constantly conscious of the things of God, because it proceeds from God. It cannot be conscious of evil. The only consciousness that can be lost is the consciousness of matter, or error, which exists only in the supposititious realm of mortal mind and disappears as one realizes that there is no mortal mind.

In "the scientific statement of being" Mary Baker Eddy states, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468). She adds that "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness." This is the only man who really exists. He is wholly mental, not material. He does not have a mind separate from God; therefore his thinking cannot become confused. No confusion can exist in Mind, for Mind is God. The all-knowing Mind could not be reflected by a limited manifestation or a mortal mind, for thereby Mind itself would become finite. Mortal mind is a counterfeit, which must be seen as nothing and replaced with the consciousness of the intelligence of immortal Mind.

Because Mind is the source of all intelligence, man cannot lose his reason or his memory. Since man has only the mentality which is his by reflection from divine Mind, loss of memory or confusion of thinking is impossible. The belief of confusion or loss of memory is a lie about man. It yields to the realization that mind is not in brain or matter and cannot become deranged.
