Several years ago through human will...

From the July 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Several years ago through human will power I broke the habit of smoking, to which I had been enslaved since early boyhood. This I did in an attempt to find much-needed health, also joy and peace of mind. Although my physical condition improved, I was not entirely healed, and I began to search further for release.

My search finally led me to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. During my first reading I recognized that the teachings of this book offered the true and provable concept of God, and that it was that for which I had long been seeking. Eagerly, by studying and applying spiritual truth as it was revealed to me, I experienced convincing proofs of the healing and regenerating power of this Science.

After some time, however, I went through a period of extreme restlessness, which I have since learned might be termed chemicalization and which is explained by Mrs. Eddy on page 401 of her textbook. The dream of life and substance in matter was broken, but I was not sufficiently advanced in spiritual comprehension to feel the constant presence, joy, and protection of divine Love, It was a state of mental transition, during which my thought reached out for comfort and security.
