A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF LOVE

From the July 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Apostle Paul, glimpsing the omnipotence of God's love, said (Rom. 8:38, 39), "Neither death, nor life,... nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." We too can feel this great love of our Father-Mother, God. And realizing it, we cannot fear. This understanding of God as Love is a law of annihilation to any sense of evil. No mortal belief is able to resist the consciousness of Love.

Christian Science teaches that we should often think of God's great love and know that its power is ever operating. Though the love of the Father-Mother is the love of Spirit for the spiritual creation, yet because it is omnipotent it is the only real force, activity, or influence in what seems to be our present sense of things. Realizing God's love causes us to understand that our real being is perfect. It causes us to be aware of the nearness and dearness of the Father-Mother, to feel His tender care, and to be aware of His omnipotence. Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of the love of divine Love, says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 77), "This is the Father's great Love that He hath bestowed upon us, and it holds man in endless Life and one eternal round of harmonious being."

It was Christ Jesus' understanding that he reflected the omnipotence, the omnipresence, and the omniaction of Love that made him fearless. It also naturally caused him to be loving to others, to so reflect the love of God that they were instantly healed. The healing Principle is Love. It was the Master's understanding of Principle and his reflection of Love that enabled him to demonstrate that mortality is a myth.
