When a child I prayed for the recovery of my infant sister, who was ill, and she became well and strong. I realized that I had witnessed the effects of a healing power beyond that of human hands, and as I became older I searched among the different churches for the source of this power. Not finding what I was seeking, I became very much disappointed.
Finally, I visited relatives who were Christian Scientists. From them I learned that evil, including sin sickness, and death, is not of God, that lack of any kind dishonors God, and that the only creator and His creation are very good. I memorized "the scientific statement of being," found in the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 468), and the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation (ibid., pp. 16, 17). As their truths began to unfold in my consciousness, I knew that I had found that for which I had been searching.
Some time later, when my two brothers and I went to the West and settled on homesteads, I took the textbook with me. Many occasions arose when I had to put into practice all I knew of its teachings. The way was not an easy one. There were no other students of Christian Science near, and no one but God to turn to for help.
