CHRIST'S NATIVITY

From the December 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Scientists love the Christmas season with its memories of the nativity of the infant Jesus—the child who was to grow into a manhood that interpreted the love of God to the world. Christmas Day refreshes their joy that through Science the Christ has come in its final glory to show all men their true sonship with God. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 320), "This interesting day, crowned with the history of Truth's idea,—its earthly advent and nativity,—is especially dear to the heart of Christian Scientists; to whom Christ's appearing in a fuller sense is so precious, and fraught with divine benedictions for mankind."

Christian Science reveals the Christ in its universal meaning as the true idea of sonship concerning every individual: man is not a frail mortal, subject to sin and death, but is the sinless and immortal son of God. As this truth dawns upon us, as it is proved in our lives through the transformation of our characters and the healing of our bodies, we experience a rebirth; the divine nature is demonstrated to be ours; Christ is born anew.

Explaining this impersonal Christ, John wrote (1:12, 13), "As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."
