There is probably no element of the so-called carnal mind more inimical to human happiness and health than the temptation to become incensed and angry. Indictment of this phase of mortal mind may be found in the Bible, where it is stated (Prov. 29:22), "An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression." Members of the clergy and of the medical profession have long indicated the untoward effects stemming from indulgence of angry passions. It remained, however, for the Science of Christianity, as discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, to present the spiritual remedy for gaining victory over this erroneous tendency.
Christian Science is posited on the Scriptural declaration in the first chapter of Genesis that God made man in His own image and likeness. A true reflection is always like its original. God is infinite good, and man is His reflection. Therefore it follows that the real man can manifest the qualities of good only. Since man expresses, or reflects, the nature of God, good, the nature of man must be good; or, otherwise phrased, man must be good-natured. Judged by the effects it produces, anger accomplishes no good. Because it is evil, it cannot be God-created. Not being of God, it is unreal. As understood in Christian Science, anger is powerless to exercise control over God's man, and it cannot usurp the spiritual dominion that God has bestowed upon him. Man, in Science, responds only to Godlike influences. Hence the supposititious force denominated anger possesses no intelligence erroneously to influence one to utter acrimonious words or commit acts alien to harmony and peace.
In his letter to the church in Ephesus the Apostle Paul set forth the spiritual remedy for godless traits when he wrote (4:31, 32), "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
