In the fall of 1933, after I had given up all hope for myself, I had my first healing through Christian Science. For years I had suffered from tuberculosis of the lungs and throat, accompanied by heart trouble and extreme weakness. I visited doctors, hospitals, health resorts, and finally a state sanatorium for tuberculosis. After spending seventeen months in bed I was given the medical verdict of "only a few more days to live."
At that time, in answer to my prayers for help, Christian Science was brought to my attention through a Christian Scientist visiting in my town. She heard of my trouble and asked if she might come and talk with me. I knew nothing of Christian Science, and the thought of her visit worried me, as I had lost my voice through the advanced stage of the tubercular throat. When she visited me I was so weak I was hardly conscious of what she was saying. I did not remember anything she said except these words: "There is as much in life for you as there is for anyone." I did not understand what she meant, but her words made an impression on me and kept coming to my mind.
She left with me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the address of a practitioner, to whom she asked me to write. I had never heard of a Christian Science practitioner, but as I was willing to try anything, I wrote her and in a very short time received her reply. It seemed hard for me to understand, however, and I never answered her letter.
