Expressing and teaching the fundamentals of what to the people of his day were revolutionary concepts was the method by which the Master, Christ Jesus, carried on his ministry. We read in the Gospel of John (6:44–59): "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. ... These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum."
The fruitage of Jesus' spiritual understanding was witnessed in his healing works, and his teaching enabled his disciples to follow his example. In Christian Science the function of teaching is exactly the same —to show the student how to heal. The ability to cure disease and redeem the sinner is the only proof that one really understands Christian Science.
When the Science of being and the laws of Life, Truth, and Love were revealed to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, she immediately began to demonstrate the truth of her discovery by healing many cases of serious and so-called incurable diseases. She saw that healing the sick was the result of obedience to fixed rules and that these scientific rules must be followed if the healing was to be successful. Soon after her discovery she began to instruct others in the basic truths of what she called Christian Science, or the Science of spiritual Mind-healing. Out of a comparatively simple beginning Mrs. Eddy developed what later became a most important activity in the Church of Christ, Scientist—the teaching of Christian Science.
