The fruitful Wilderness

From the May 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the wilderness of loneliness
Our Master proved the love he bore for God and man.
He saw it is not bread but Truth and Love men hunger for.

He saw the utter uselessness of error's strategy;
That powers temporal can never give the true dominion
Over all the earth, which is man's royal right.

Because he loved, no subtle argument of pride
Could cast him from the pinnacle of praise,
Nor cripple his divine integrity,
Nor tempt him into using human means to gain his goal.
He saw that only as we love can we receive the angel thoughts
That heal the sick and satisfy the poor.
In peace or war the ministry of Love alone
Could win the victories he labored for.
