Christian Science came into my experience at a time when I was in a strange country without money or employment. This situation was all the more difficult because prior to that time I had been living in luxury, although without any religious convictions whatever. There had been times when I was intensely unhappy and dissatisfied with my manner of living, because it was so aimless, and there did not appear to be any reason for existence.
The practitioner to whom I applied for help and who lovingly guided my first steps Spiritward impressed me by her patience and loving-kindness, as well as by the authority and conviction with which she spoke; but I could not at first understand or accept what she told me of the truth, because my thinking was beclouded with self-pity. One day, however, while reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I suddenly looked up from the book and said, "This is the truth." The irrefutable logic in this great textbook so impressed itself on my thought that I was able to accept its teachings wholeheartedly. No sudden change came about in my outward situation, but I found myself happy in spite of my difficulties. In fact I experienced a period of exaltation in the realization that I had found the reason for being, and I was satisfied.
Later on, a way opened for me to return to the Orient, where I had previously lived. I sought out a practitioner there and became an earnest student of Christian Science. Soon I joined a branch church and entered into its activities. Afterward I was accepted for membership in The Mother Church. My spiritual progress was rapid, and my material circumstances became quite comfortable, also extremely interesting and satisfying.
