After reading gratefully the testimonies...

From the October 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After reading gratefully the testimonies of healing in a Journal, I found the words of the Psalmist uttering themselves in my thought (Ps. 116:12): "What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me?" and turning to the Bible I read the answer in the following verses of the Psalm: "I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people." So I am writing to tell, with deepest gratitude, of the great joy which Christian Science has brought into my life.

I had no formal religious upbringing, because it was the wish of my father that I should be free to choose my religion for myself. From childhood I had an awareness of spiritual beauty, but I did not turn to God in prayer until I was adult. The world outlook was dark, and there was much suffering. Then I became joyously aware of God's existence through a feeling of His love and tenderness. I began to read the New Testament. Part of the Bible passage which is read at every Sunday service in Churches of Christ, Scientist, became illumined for me (I John 3:2): "Now are we the sons of God." The word "now" stood out with great significance.

A deep spiritual experience followed, and through the desire to understand it I was finally led to Christian Science. This Science enabled me to understand that God "hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son" (Col. 1:13). Healings followed for myself and others. The first outstanding proof came after I closed a door when our son, then about two years old, had the fingers of one hand in the hinge side. I refused to look at the sense evidence and turned to God, Mind. The words of Christ Jesus concerning little children gently voiced themselves in my thought (Matt. 18:10), "Their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." As this recognition of reflection came to me, the little one smiled and then took his usual midday sleep. He woke about two hours later, radiantly happy and with unblemished fingers.
