THE BEAUTY AND FREEDOM OF SOUL

From the October 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Man who had started on an automobile trip before daylight stopped soon after the dawn so that he could enjoy the freshness of the morning and the early songs of the birds. As the glorious coloring of the sunrise appeared, he thought of the words of a hymn (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 317),

Still, still with Thee when purple morning breaketh
When the bird waketh, and the shadows flee,
Fairer than morning, lovelier than the daylight,
Dawns the sweet consciousness, I am with Thee.

He felt extremely grateful to Christian Science for the Soul-sense that had awakened in him, because it enabled him to be aware of the presence of God and to be conscious of the "beauty of the Lord," which the Psalmist prayed might "be upon us" (Ps. 90:17). Soul, God, the One "altogether lovely" (S. of Sol. 5:16), is Life, hence the real universe is ever beautiful and harmonious. By often thinking of our true spiritual selfhood as ever aware of the universe of eternal freshness and fairness, we are lifted above beliefs of discord and unloveliness.
