I was reared in an orthodox church,...

From the October 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was reared in an orthodox church, where I studied the Bible throughout my Sunday School years. Also, our family had daily Bible readings. For this I am grateful, because it gave me a foundation of the letter of the Bible and paved the way for the spiritual inspiration that comes to us when the light of Christian Science is thrown on the Scriptures. I became interested in Science because I was impressed with the way it enabled a friend to meet a difficult problem. Here was a practical religion, I felt, one to live by. It has indeed proved itself so in my experience. Not only has it healed physical difficulties, but through its application my husband and I have been led into a more harmonious and abundant life.

At the close of World War II, when my husband returned home after three and a half years of civilian sea duty and tried to get his former position back, he was told he could have it. Yet the necessary papers did not come through, and upon investigation he found that they had been pigeonholed. After trying for some weeks to make arrangements for the position, he gave up. A practitioner who worked for us during this time told us that God's plan for us did not depend on that place. In a short time my husband was offered a much better position, which has proved a blessing to all. This meant that we had to find a home in a new location, and when I stopped telling God what I wanted and prayed humbly to know what He had provided for us, we were led to a lovely home, which has met our needs beautifully.

We have had many physical healings through the application of Christian Science, and I should like to tell of two. When I was still a young student of Science we took a baby boy for adoption. It was with great love and with much gratitude in our hearts to at last have a baby of our own that we brought him into our home. The head of the adoption agency warned us to have him checked regularly by a doctor, because he was not entirely free from a cold he had contracted a few days after his birth.
