My first healing in Christian Science was that of chronic stomach trouble of over twenty years' standing. Four different physicians failed to give me any relief. Shortly after my introduction to Science this distressing and painful condition was completely healed by the application of what little I then knew of the truth, and I was able to eat whatever I desired. This healing, which has been permanent, proved to me the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 152), "Truth has a healing effect, even when not fully understood."
Facial neuralgia, fallen arches, and nervous headaches disappeared as I continued to study. An attack of intestinal influenza, which caused severe headaches and stoppage of the bowels for a period of two weeks, yielded to the treatment of a Christian Science practitioner. A case of arthritis was overcome by my own daily study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings.
One day while hurrying down into a darkened cellar, I struck one of my legs against a sharp piece of board, which protruded from a broken box, causing a deep wound. I immediately declared that accidents are unknown to God and that therefore they could not be known to me, His idea. I continued to work along this line, but was unable to overcome a great sense of fear. My whole leg began to swell, and later, infection set in. It became necessary to enlist the services of a practitioner, and although the swelling and a discharge continued for some time, they caused me no great inconvenience. I was on my feet every day, doing more than my usual amount of work, as it was the canning season. Finally the swelling went down, the discharge stopped, and the leg was normal.
