WHO RULES THE WORLD?

From the November 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Who rules the world? If we were to ask this question of a number of people, there would undoubtedly be several answers given. Today the impression of many is that material might and human will are supreme and that these can challenge and sometimes outweigh the power of God.

Christian Science reveals that Christ, Truth, is the power of God, which must ultimately prevail. Those who understand the power of Christ can testify to this fact. The Bible records many instances in which the material might of mortals was set aside and superseded by the ever-present reigning power of the Christ, which was demonstrated in the affairs of men.

How helpless were the great Egyptian Pharaoh, his wise men, and magicians, when they failed to interpret the dream of the king. Yet Joseph, the young slave from a foreign land who had been unjustly held in prison, solved the mystery through heaven-bestowed spiritual discernment. Then Pharaoh, the symbol of worldly supremacy, sought a man "in whom the Spirit of God is" (Gen. 41:38) and decided to make Joseph the active governor of the realm. Through the insight of this inspired messenger, Egypt and the country surrounding it were provided with food during seven years of famine. Where the mighty king and his advisors had failed, Joseph, inspired by God, succeeded. It was proved that Spirit, not matter, ruled the world.
