Poems

Birthright

From the February 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Let us rejoice in the sinless purity of man,
Walking serenely in the love of God.
How noble is his aspect, meek his mien,
How fearlessly he moves within the light,
Knowing his stature as a prince of Truth,
Reflection from the radiance of Mind,
Secure within the sinlessness of Soul.

Be not persuaded we are mortals caught in shades
Of good and evil, by confusions carried
Down devious paths of this and that belief,
Tossed in the maelstrom of a thousand doubts,
Subjected to a thousand thousand fears,
And vulnerable to sin as to disease.
Resist all urge to sell your birthright thus
By careless or unguarded ruminations,
Fearful or pleasurable. Trust them not,
But turn with resolution to the light,
That God may cause His face to shine upon you,
And you may know yourself forever held
Within the perfectness of His creation.

To those with such resolve the crown is given,
And fresh commissions from the Father's grace.
