Christian Science has manifested a profound influence in my life since its teachings have been fully accepted and an honest effort has been made to apply its precepts to my everyday living.
Despite the fact that my mother was an earnest Christian Scientist, who taught her children the truths of her religion, when I went out into the world I almost entirely neglected the teachings of my childhood. Advancement came easily in the organization with which I was associated, and life, as I knew it then, held inspiration only for material and selfish gains. Then came the inevitable cataclysm which was to lead to my full recognition and acceptance of the teachings my mother had given her children.
During the depression of the 1930's I was promoted to an advanced assignment that held considerable responsibility. My anxiety to meet this challenge during the period of insecurity and fear led in my working hours to an overwhelming sense of frustration, which was aggravated by a feeling of extreme mental and physical disability. This condition finally compelled me to surrender my position. Then came weary months of trips to hospitals, sanatoriums, health resorts, and clinics, during which time my weight fell from one hundred and eighty to ninety-eight pounds. A complete mental and physical breakdown followed. In view of this, the insurance company accepted the verdict of total and permanent disability, and on that basis I was retired and pensioned by my company.
Here man's extremity became God's opportunity. Inspired by my wife's indomitable faith in the goodness of God, a faith that had been buttressed by devoted study of Christian Science, I turned again to the teachings of my childhood. Through the great patience of my wife and the aid of a devoted practitioner, I gradually began to glimpse the rays of truth.
The year that followed my turning to Christian Science was replete with joyous study and progressive understanding. I was completely healed. A medical examination for the insurance company confirmed this healing, which was followed by the cancellation of the disability payments.
However, there was another demonstration of God's care to be made before I was to be accepted in the business world once more. I had arrived at the age which modern industry classifies as being well beyond man's productive years. Then there was the medical record reflecting my total disability, which, according to mortal mind's interpretation, could return.
As I held thought to the truth that God's business is the only business and is one which holds no restraints against man, it was not long before I was given a responsible position in my chosen field with remuneration beyond that which I had ever received before. This assignment was handled with complete confidence in my ability to discharge satisfactorily the responsibilities of the position over what proved to be an extended period of extremely trying times. As a matter of fact, my services elicited a congratulatory letter from the president of the organization with which I was employed.
I am deeply grateful for the many blessings that have come to us through the application of the truths of Christian Science. My gratitude encompasses a wife's faith that remained constant, despite many dark days; the aid of devoted practitioners; the loving support of five wonderful sisters, all dedicated Christian Scientists from childhood, and membership in The Mother Church.— Anoka, Minnesota.
I consider it a privilege to verify the preceding testimony given by my husband. Prior to my marriage I was employed in the field of medicine as a registered nurse. It was not difficult, however, to adopt Christian Science as my spiritual guide, for what I had heard of this religion had stirred a desire for the study of its precepts. In addition to the wonderful healing my husband enjoyed, our little family has had various other healings, including those of pneumonia, influenza, and a tumor. I am indeed very grateful for Christian Science and for membership in The Mother Church.
