Christ Jesus, shortly before the close of his earthly mission, spoke several times to his disciples of the Comforter or "Spirit of truth"' that should come into the world. He said (John 16:12, 13): "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth." This "Spirit of truth," which appeared to the disciples on the Day of Pentecost, has come to us in our age through the revelation of Christian Science to Mary Baker Eddy.
Mrs. Eddy states in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 370): "In different ages the divine idea assumes different forms, according to humanity's needs. In this age it assumes, more intelligently than ever before, the form of Christian healing. This is the babe we are to cherish. This is the babe that twines its loving arms about the neck of omnipotence, and calls forth infinite care from His loving heart."
Many people may at times have been tempted to believe, when a particularly difficult situation has presented itself to them, that because their understanding of Christian Science seems so small and immature, it is consequently quite inadequate to deal with such a problem. This is a subtle temptation, and if one is not alert, he may find every time it comes that he is just sitting back with the conviction that he can really do very little about the problem. Someone else might have more inspiration and understanding, but not he! In such an attitude of mind, he faces the situation from a defeatist standpoint instead of from a victorious one—the standpoint of Christian Science.
